Obituary for Wayne King

Wayne King passed away peacefully on Tuesday May 16th, 2023 surrounded by his family at Brockville General Hospital. Wayne died after a brief illness and died as he lived; on his own terms. He led an active lifestyle and was always our personal handyman.

He was born in Brockville on May 31st, 1942 and raised in the surrounding area. In 1963 he married the love of his life, Donna, and they shared a wonderful 60 years together. Wayne enjoyed a 40-year career with Dupont Canada (Maitland) as a Millwright. During those years at Dupont, Wayne was a member of the Dupont fire service and CERT team.

Once the family moved to the current home near Lyn, Wayne joined the Elizabethtown-Kitley volunteer fire department based out of Station 1 in Lyn. His roles included being an active firefighter (1975), captain (1982) and deputy chief (1993) over the course of 40 years, Wayne was very involved and often known to be the first one on the scene. Upon his retirement from fire service in 2015 he would still visit the station to share stories and laughs with his friends and colleagues.

Wayne’s true passion was always his family. Despite his outside commitments, he was ever present with Donna and the girls and then with his grandchildren. If you ever got Wayne talking about his grandsons, you were in for a good story; and it didn’t take much to get those conversations started. Wayne and Donna enjoyed great adventures with their grandsons. Wayne wore the official ‘proud grandpa’ hat at every event possible.

Wayne is survived by his wife, Donna (Martin), his daughters Darlene Lawson (Jeff) and Christine Karasiuk (Kyle); his grandchildren Dane Lawson (Dayna) and Drew Lawson (Izzy) and Cameron Karasiuk . Also survived by his brother, Ernest King, and a sister-in-law Dianne Davis, and several nieces and nephews. Wayne was predeceased by siblings Irene, Melvin, Gervan, Gordon, Gary and Eldin. Predeceased by parents Ernest (Sue) King and the former Mildred Roberts of Prescott, and Mother-In-Law Edith Martin.

The family is very grateful for the care Wayne received from the medical teams at KHSC-KGH and BGH. Special thanks to Dr. Andrea Fung, Dr. Gerry Ashe, Dr. Jay Jaworski, and Dr. Andrew Thomas. Many thanks also to the Brockville and District Palliative Care Service and Bayshore. The care and compassion was extraordinary and heartfelt.

At Wayne’s request, cremation and a private family service have already taken place. A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, June 3rd, 2023 from 12:00-3:00pm at the Elizabethtown-Kitley Fire Station in Lyn, ON. In memory of Wayne, donations to the Brockville and District Hospital Foundation’s Palliative Care unit or to EKFD will be gratefully acknowledged.

May the life-long memories remain in our hearts forever.
